Welcome to my Life

Hi! I’m Anam Shaikh. I’m 17 years old (on 29 November yoooooo) and I’m (unfortunately) from India. Not that I’m ashamed of my Indian heritage, y’all cannot compare to my knowledge and understanding of Indian dialects, nor can you compare to the number to my relatives, close relatives.

I don’t know what to do with my bushy eyebrows(“At least you have two!”my uni brow-ed friends say), my Kylie Jenner lips(“KYLIE JENNER SMH”) and my fat thighs(“…”).

I spend a ridiculously obscene amount of time and money on books. I write about books. I dream of new books. And my mother(and the postman) wonder how I can read so many books without going mad(“Maybe you are mad already. Haha!””Shut up.”).

This dog is my spirit animal.

i eat everything dog

I like to diy(“NO YOU DO NOT!YOU LIKE TO DAMAGE MY HOUSE AND ALL MY THINGS AND MY LIFE”says my mother). Okay, I diy with disastrous results.

I also bake.(“No, you heat some horrible concoction of flour and eggs and butter and pass them off as cakes.”my mother again)

I also have this uncanny ability to remember entire passages of Shakespeare which I learnt 2 years ago but have no idea of what happened in school today.

I watch YouTube tutorials on Makeup and hijabs. Suffice it to say that I would never show myself in public after trying my hand at both of them.

I am a closet traveler and have traveled to New York, Istanbul,Toronto, Paris, London, Afghanistan, Iran; all in my head.

I have an urge
to be
somewhere
where I’m not.

I want to be
a vagabond,
a bird of passage,
a wanderer,
an adventurer.

I want to wake up
in a city that isn’t mine
and to be lost
in a sea of
faces I don’t recognise.

I am in love
with the sounds of languages
I don’t understand
and the scents of
foods my tongue has never felt.

I have an urge
to be
somewhere
that isn’t here.

I want to chase pavements
of streets I don’t know
the names of
and to explore towns
without maps to show the way.

I want to be somewhere
where I am a nobody;
to drift unplanned
and to take wrong turns
ending up
in the middle of nowhere.

I want to take
my backpack and go;
to return only when my shoes
are battered
and my suitcase
is filled to the brim
with memories
and stories.

I just have an urge
to be
somewhere.

Hmm…what else?(“Why don’t you tell them about the fact that you talk to imaginary people in parentheses?””Don’t be silly. I do no such things”)

I’m a part-time poet. Some of my poems are so good I go like “Maaaahhhnnn, did I really l write this? This should totally go viral”

When I’m not reading books, or doing anything of the above, I am playing with cats, or browsing Buzzfeed.(“Isn’t that, like, the same thing?”)

P.S: I’ve been brought up on a diet of Dad jokes, it’s times to give back.(Not that I’m a dad, but… you get it, right? Please say ‘Yes’.)

On this boring blog, you’ll find boring pieces of my boring life, boring reviews of boring books, boring stories my boring self has written, and other boring things.

Boring err, Happy Reading!

(I’m not saying anything of that sort, but my birthday is on 29 November and I’m definitely not asking you to gift me things from my……… wishlist … I never said that!)

Update: I’m also an idiot

Update: I DON’T KNOW WHY I ADDED EVEN THE LAST UPDATE

Update: Proved that I’m an idiot.

My postman is worried now that I’ve switched priorities. He asked me the other day if all that makeup is SERIOUSLY for me?
      Whatever.
